Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students sometimes ask me, "Can we just do our math instead of recess?" When the learning is fun enough, the difference between the yard and the classroom becomes inconsequential. As an Expeditionary Learning school, our instruction is based on the principles of character, academic rigor, and high-quality work. In the primary grades, we believe in honoring the development of the whole child, and infuse play and playfulness, music, and art into our learning throughout the day.

My school is a bilingual elementary school in Washington Heights, a diverse (though predominantly Latino) neighborhood in upper Manhattan.

My students are creative, kind, and culturally aware second graders. They can greet you in five different languages. They love to sing, meditate, and collaborate. My students learn in Spanish for half of each day, and in English for the other half. While some are learning Spanish, others are learning English and every child is both a teacher and a learner. With all these wonderful attributes, it bears noting that we are a 95% free lunch public school in serious need of additional resources to provide the education we envision for our students!

My Project

Rich, interactive play is an essential part of child development, yet many families struggle to find ways to engage their children. Last year, I began experimenting with a way to promote cognitive, language, and social-emotional development in my students' homes by harnessing the power of play: mandatory play homework!

My students choose from our class set of games, and, this year, chess to play with family members and caregivers as a core part of their homework routine, getting them away from TV and supporting them in developing creative, collaborative thinking skills at home!

With structured, official play homework, my students and their families were able to engage in healthy, productive activities after school. It created a new routine, offering access to a wide variety of games that my low-income students would not otherwise have had access to. As one child wrote, "My family used to do TV and video games but now we play with our Play HW."

This year, we're expanding. Each week, one full class will get to choose games to take home to play with their families, such as Set Junior, Jenga, or Connect Four. Another class will have "chess week" in which all students bring home a chess set with a "HW assignment" for parents (one chapter/move from the books in this order) - then we'll celebrate with chess tournaments. The games will rotate among classrooms each week so that more students benefit from the program.

I teach my students how important interactive, collaborative play is for their brain development, and they become their own advocates, writing, "Thank you for the play homework because it makes our brains grow."

Thank you for your support in expanding this innovative program. We hope to keep growing until play HW is no longer an innovation but the norm!
