My Students

As scholars, our young students work each and every day to master the skills and concepts they will need to thrive. This means that while we challenge learners academically, we also work with our middle schoolers to help them build the necessary social-emotional skills to succeed.

Our students are in the sixth grade -- they're just beginning to truly get a sense of who they are, both academically, and socially.

As learners, they are driven to succeed, in whatever their goals might be (whether that's making the basketball team, or Principal's List). Recently, our students had an opportunity to demonstrate their learning to the school-wide community during Exhibition Day: selected scholars presented their work to teachers, administrators, and parents. It was a chance for scholars to share their learning with an authentic audience!

My Project

On cold, and rainy days here in New York City our students spend their thirty-minute recess inside the classroom (there just isn't an alternative). During the past few weeks we have observed that our scholars are less than thrilled with this schedule. As a sixth grade team, we've collaborated to consider how we can foster a more positive environment for our students and would like to provide our students with a collection of board and card games to use during the period (one per classroom). We feel that providing fun resources will foster cooperation, and a positive classroom climate, when the weather is unaccommodating.

In a recent Scholastic article the authors write: "games don't need to be overtly academic to be educational... just by virtue of playing them, board games can teach important social skills, such as communicating verbally, sharing, waiting, taking turns, and enjoying interaction with others." Board games can also foster the ability to focus, and lengthen a students' attention span by encouraging the completion of an exciting, enjoyable activity.
