My Students

"Ago?" "Ame!" ("Are you ready to learn?" "Yes, we are ready to learn!") My music students are familiar with this call and response which, borrowed from the folkloric traditions of West Africa loosely translates to "Listen!" and "I am listening."

The students at my school are comfortable with multiple languages.

Mandarin, Spanish, Urdu, Russian, Arabic, and Uzbek make up the first languages of most of my students. Some are still learning English, but that doesn't stop them from having fun in the music room.

It is no doubt that their capacity to understand two or more languages attracts them to music. A community of immigrants, the students have a wonderful opportunity to bring a bit of their musical culture to our school, sharing their unique experiences and learning to appreciate others' contributions. Our school is large, around thirteen hundred students, with seventy percent of them qualifying for free lunch. With the current COVID-19 pandemic, our students are participating in hybrid learning, which is a mix of in-person and remote (at-home) learning. It is the goal of our school to accomplish this safely and comprehensively!

My Project

One of the best things about playing in band is being together making music with one another. Kids love coming to the band room! Now, our band room is virtual and making music together is full of mic problems and internet lags. While we are still finding ways to collaborate in music-making, an opportunity to focus inward has presented itself.

Sometimes, musicians just need to "step into the shed" to practice.

This has always been a solitary activity that can help students build emotional and mental stamina as well as self-empowerment as they rely on themselves to improve.

Practicing with a Jamey Aebersold play-along is a time-honored rite-of-passage that all jazz students go through. The books are organized by composer or concept and have music in all keys. The play-along CDs/digital files feature a professional rhythm section for the kids to play along with. I've even thrown in some advanced music for the students who want the extra challenge! I plan to offer these collections in our music library for students to check out and to take home and practice with. Then, when we are finally back together, we can use them to jam!
