Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

CS K-8 is a Title I school, provided with financial assistance due to our high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families to help ensure that all children meet challenging state academic standards. 94% of our students are economically disadvantaged. 98% of our students are of African American or Hispanic/ Latino background. According to the recent test scores released by the Florida Department of Education, our school soared from a ‘D’ to a ‘C’ on the school rating scale.

During the 2015-2016 school year, CS K-8 participated in the Green Schools Challenge.

Teachers learned how to incorporate energy and water conservation education into K-12 classrooms through a series of monthly challenges. By the end of the program we received recognition as a Top 10 school within the program for the school year.

My Project

This project will provide elementary students living in food deserts access to healthy organic produce by installing a student garden system at the school site. Student will also utilize the system in along with community provided garden curriculum to teach Life Science benchmarks and eco-agricultural principles.

We need a hydroponics center.

We believe this system will help improve the quality of life for our students and improve science proficiency school-wide. CS K-8 is a Title I school; 94% of the school’s students are economically disadvantaged. This system will grow food for the children and their families who lack access to healthy produce. In Science, CS achieved 30% proficiency in 2015 and increased by 8% in 2016. With the urban farming system combined with sustainability curriculum provided by EcoRise as part of our partnership with Helping Miami Grow, we are confident that the growth will be even more significant.
