Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 9th and 10th grade biology to 75 English Language Learners (ELLs) at Flushing International High School (FIHS) in Flushing, New York. FIHS is a 3-year old empowerment school that serves only immigrant students with less than 2 years of education in English. As a result, the entire population of the school are ELLs. As a member of the Internationals Network of Schools, our mission is to teach English in context of the subject area courses. Students learn English and complete their high school requirements simultaneously. At our school, students engage in experiential, interdisciplinary group projects and hands-on learning so as to create shared experiences that help all levels of students learn complex content, communication skills, and language.
Growing and experimenting with plants is an extremely hands-on, communal activity that helps build vocabulary, communicate numerous key biological concepts, and teach basic to complex scientific principals. I have also found that many of my students have prior experience with growing plants in their native countries. Growing their own at a new school in a new country helps them access prior knowledge in their native language as well as find something familiar to cling to in an alien environment. Studying and caring for these unusual plants will broaden students' experience with stewardship of living things. These plants will be an important component of our curriculum, which includes numerous experiences that teach the properties of life.
These carnivorous plants will be a welcome addition to our classroom and will enrich our curriculum and students' experiences. In addition, my fellow science teachers (each with 75 students of their own) and my after-school Science Challenge Club could also use the plants, extending their usefulness across the school. Your financial help will provide a lasting experience for a group of wonderfully eager and hard-working students. Thank you so much for your help.
