My Project

Plants are a great way to improve the classroom environment and students' well being. Studies have shown that having plants in the classroom decreases stress and anxiety and increases creativity. Additional studies have found that K-12 students’ concentration, focus, and test scores improve when they have plants in the classroom.

With the materials in this project students will learn how to cultivate indoor plants.

At the start of the school year, each student will take responsibility for the care of one plant. They will learn about its needs, optimal growing conditions and how to best care for it. Throughout the school year students will keep track of the health of their plant and work to trouble-shoot any problems that come up. As plants grow students will learn how to propegate their plant. At the end of the year students will be able to take home their plant, while leaving behing their propegated plants for the following year's sixth graders.

My hope is that this project will give my students a chance to connect to nature and to receive some of the many health benefits related to working with plants. In addition, I see the benefits reaching beyond the students working directly with the plants and touching every student who will spend time in a classroom filled with plants.
