Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine enjoying the juicy taste of cherry tomatoes and the crunch of baby carrots picked fresh from your grandma's vegetable garden. Students in my classroom are some of the poorest students in my district. Consequently eating fresh quality food is almost unheard of.

My students are a mix of ESL students and students who are in the first stages of being identified for Special Education.

So hands-on experiences are key to their success in learning and showing understanding. Our school district is one of the largest in the country, while our city is only 500,000. Our school hosts a large number of refugee students from Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. It's not uncommon for refugee students to enter my classroom having NEVER attended school before. So besides learning English, they also are struggling to understand school social norms. Most students receive 100% free breakfast and lunch as well as assistance from the local food and clothing banks. Our school is about 50% neighborhood school students and 50% of students are bussed in from a poverty stricken neighborhood about 4 miles away. Our school is a fine arts magnet, so students receive art, music, dance and drama classes two times a week.

My Project

In previous years, I've grown small plants (mostly flowers) with my students, but it has been a very short term project due to the limitations of space and equipment in my portable classroom. With the addition of this Grow Lab, we will be able to grow plants throughout the year, without taking up much space in the classroom. By growing carrots, beans, lettuce, beets, onions, and tomato plants throughout the year, students will have direct opportunities to learn about and eat healthy foods. Gardeners in my room will also hone observation, data collection, and measurement skills while working in teams to manage their section of the garden. By having direct experience with ever-changing living organisms, they will have more chances to use logic skills when explaining changes they observe. They will write and verbalize about what they see. And they will solidify this academic learning by connecting it with their senses of sight, smell, touch and taste.

Personally, I was raised in a rural farming community, and I learned early on how we are all connected--people, plants, animals, soil, water and sky.

Through our classroom garden, I hope students will learn what it means to be a part of something larger than themselves, and how they have responsibilities to their community, be it rural or urban.
