Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine the biggest and most infectious smiles, complete with twinkling eyes and open mouthes. Now place those smiles on five-year-olds as they learn to read, write, and do math - and that's what I see every day in my classroom.

My school's mission is to eliminate the achievement gap and empower students to become problem solvers.

I am passionate about providing the best education possible to my enthusiastic students. My class is comprised of Latino and African American students who live in South Los Angeles. All of them receive daily free lunches, and most are English Language Learners. Above all, my students are scholars who will become our next generation of leaders!

My Project

After over a year of virtual teaching, the importance of one's learning environment is more evident than ever. Research has shown that neutral tones and natural greenery enhance student focus while reducing distraction. Plants in a classroom have also been proven to reduce stress and anxiety while increasing memory and concentration. So, following cues from research, we're trading in our bright colors for neutral tones and greenery!

My goal is to create a calming, research-based environment for my students' home away from home.

Ivy and burlap will cover bulletin boards to create a warm and inviting feel. Plants will sit on bookshelves to surround students and help them focus. The inclusion of class photos throughout the room will help create ownership and belonging for each student.

These changes to our classroom learning environment will directly impact my students' learning!
