My Students

My students are the future scientists and mathematicians that will save our planet. I teach in an urban district that is Connecticut's first all magnet district. My school is the district's STEM magnet school and we serve approximately 650 students grades preK-5. I have taught in this district for 19 years, 15 of them at this school, and have taught grades 1 - 3.

This year I am moving to 5th grade!

I look forward to the challenge of learning a new curriculum while experiencing the developmental highs and lows of fifth graders. I will be teaching math and science to two groups of students, from nineteen different towns. I taught several of them when they were third graders two years ago and look forward to seeing them again.

In third grade, I worked hard to create a love of math and science in my students and I hope to build on that this year. Winthrop STEM students are intelligent, inquisitive, and active. They love to get their hands dirty and really dig in to new projects. Our school has two, fairly large, garden areas that students design, plant, and maintain. Winthrop borders Riverside Park, where students further explore nature.

My Project

Students who demonstrate understanding can: 5-LS1-1. Support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water. [Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on the idea that plant matter comes mostly from air and water, not from the soil.]

This is a standard taken directly from the Next Generation Science Standards for fifth grade.

NGSS is nationwide and Connecticut voted this past year to adopt those standards for our state.

This project requests an AquaSprouts Garden Kit, a Hydrofarm Grow Light, one Freshwater Master Test Kit, a Culinary Herb Set, one Aquponic Betta Tank, an aquarium heater and thermometer. The AquaSprouts garden kit demonstrates to students that plants can grow without soil, provided they get the nutrients they need from water and air. It will also show students a symbiotic relationship between plants and animals.

The fish in the aquarium feed off the roots of the plants, while the plants draw nutrients from the waste in the aquarium water. Both plants and fish are able to survive and thrive because of each other. Our class theme this year will be "working together as a community" and the AquaSprouts grow lab will show them that even in nature, working together benefits everyone!
