My Students

My students, ages 14-17, come from all over the world. These students and their families are currently living in New York City, the greatest city in the world, during a global pandemic. I have not yet met my students face-to-face due to the circumstances surrounding this school year. This year has its added difficulties, but not seeing my students every day, getting to know what makes them laugh, and seeing their eyes light up when they grasp a topic has been the worst part.

Technology has been difficult for my students, and a physical copy of the book we are reading will give them a much-needed break from the screen and help them engage with the story in a different way.

My students are the highlight of my day every day during this pandemic. They deserve everything that a typical school year has to offer. I do not know when or if I will be in the classroom with my students this year, but I can at least give them a book to read.

My Project

Students have been deprived of so many traditional school experiences this year. Holding and reading a physical book is one of those integral school experiences that my students have gone without this year.

Remote learning is extremely difficult, but especially for students new to the country learning English as a New Language.

Being able to interact with the text through highlighting and annotating by hand is such an important part of language acquisition. This year my students' only interaction with texts has been through digital tools.

Not to mention, our eyes could all use a break from the screens. Reading a physical copy of Seedfolks will give my students (and their eyes) a much needed break from the screens.
