Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The majority of our students come from low-income households and live in parts of our city that are considered food deserts. Many of our families are food-insecure and struggle to access fresh fruits and vegetables, which in turn affects our students' health Our goals for this project is for student to learn how to plant seeds in order to grow their own food and to provide fresh fruits and vegetables for our community. We will plant seeds in our existing school garden and learn how to plant container gardens, so that even if our families have small spaces, they will be able to grow their own food.

Students will learn about food deserts and how creating community gardens can create more access to healthy food.

They will also give presentations and workshops for our students, families, and local community to educate about planting and healthy eating. We will plant heirloom varieties of herbs and vegetables that can continue to feed our families and communities. Our project will help students learn how to grow food and encourage healthy eating habits in our community.

With your donations, we will plant seeds in pots that students paint, so that that families will be able to take home to add to or start their own gardens. We will also invite families to join our school's community garden, "The Generations Garden", so they know there is a place where they can access fresh fruits and vegetables. We want to distribute the plants at our school's open house as a gift and reminder that students are also growing and that we have a garden at our school that all families are welcome to be a part of.
