My Students

Imagine being expected to learn about the intricacies of the living world while most of your environment is composed of buildings and roads, with little plant or animal life to observe.

My students come from all over our city (over 80 different middle/elementary schools) and help create a diverse and accepting school environment.

85% of students quality for free/reduced lunch. These students love learning about science and investigating the hows and whys of the living world. Even more so, they love performing experiments and seeing these processes at work in front of their own eyes.

My Project

The Genetics of Plants, Natural Selection, and Animal Behavior labs will allow students to actually observe such processes as natural selection, genetic inheritance, behavioral responses, and plant growth. What makes these more exciting to students is that the labs allow them to work with living organisms. Most students can tell you what a plant needs to survive, but they have never been responsible for planting, caring for, and mating that plant for future generations. They can tell you about how humans respond to environmental conditions, or how organisms they have seen on TV or in movies respond, but have never been able to create their own investigations to identify the conditions and physiology responsible for arthropod or crustacean reactions. With the plant light houses, students will be able to grow generations of plants for the entire school to use.

These activities will allow students to build the content knowledge necessary to earn college credit for the AP Biology exam, but will also help instill in them an appreciation for the natural world.
