Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Nearly 200 languages are spoken in our county, representing people from almost every nation on Earth. Queens, NY is truly the melting pot of the world, with millions of people all packed into 100 square miles, which makes it one of the most densely populated and urbanized places on Earth, as well. My school, located in the heart of Queens, is a microcosm of everything about our county. My students are all immigrants, speaking more than a dozen languages, and hailing from every continent on Earth except Antarctica. Our school grounds, like most of our county, are mostly concrete. Our building is utilitarian architecture: squat and brick - a hallway with classrooms, but not much else.

It’s an irony to me that while our school is diverse in its people, it doesn’t begin to match the diversity of the places, plants, and foods from where my students came.

My Project

In partnership with the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition, I want to use plants to diversify the grounds of our school – especially with the herbs and greens grown from my students’ native countries. I want to use the space in our schoolyard to build planter boxes where students, families, and others in the community can dig their own piece of earth and take herbs and greens for their own kitchen. Along with lumber I hope to get donated from local suppliers, we'll use the saw, screws, landscape cloth, and other tools to construct simple wooden planter boxes that can hold herbs and vegetables for people and wildflowers for pollinators.

Food will be fresher, everyone will get to enjoy the products of the garden, and our concrete yard won’t look so stark anymore.

Also, due to the cold New York winters, it’s difficult to maintain any kind of year-round outdoor garden. The tools I am requesting will also be used to build smaller planters we can maintain in the classrooms, allowing the same benefits of a garden to last all year long.

Please donate so our gardening aspirations can be made real.
