This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
My urban kids choose Environmental Science, Plant and Horticulture, or Animal Anatomy and Physiology as science classes. I have the opportunity to see them grow and develop from their first science class in 7th grade to their chosen electives in eleventh and twelfth grade.
My science students live in the city of Cincinnati and come from a myriad of ethnic backgrounds.
Our community is diverse, yet most of our students come from a low income and high mobility city.
My Project
African violets are flowering plants that are primarily cultivated as common indoor house plants, but they also have a cultural association to mothers. Because of this association, African Violets have been traditional presents to give to Mothers; specifically for Mother’s Day.
Please give to our African Violet Tissue Culture Propagation project to allow my students to learn about plants, different techniques of propagation like tissue culture to enhanced learning and appreciation of the Plant world.
Students would propagate African Violets in test tubes, then plant two of them in the provide pots. One of these African Violets is to be given away at Mother's Day for a community service project and the other for students to keep for themselves to cultivate further and recall this learning for years to come.
