My Project

Our school is so lucky to have an outdoor garden, and each first grade class has the pleasure of working on it once a week. For our class, that is just not enough time to truly feed their little farmer souls. We have continued our work with seeds and plants in our classroom, and have been growing and experimenting during the warmer months. We currently have a small crop of radish sprouts almost ready to go into the outdoor garden!

There is a fantastic quote by Rowan White that says, "Each one of us descends from people who have been in an intimate and reciprocal relationship with plants and seed since the dawning of time." We want to push our kids to engage on a deeper level with their farming work.

Having a more substantial set-up in our classroom will allow us to spend time farming year-round, and think more about how our food gets from seed to plate.

The large garden container will be host to our many student-led plant experiments. We'll need fertilizer and organic soil as well as materials for seed starting like paper pot makers and trays. Of course, since our container will be indoors we'll need a grow light to help our little sprouts along.
