This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Welcome, everyone. My name is Mr. Wong and I currently work as a 3rd-grade teacher in the South Bronx, NY. I love my students for their creativity, enthusiasm, and determination to succeed in school and in everyday life. Each and every single one of my students has unique character strengths and abilities that allow them to express their individuality in a social environment. However, as grown ups, we know that life isn't all sunshine and rainbows, and everyone needs some help sometimes. Since a majority of my students come from disadvantaged backgrounds with nearly 95% of them currently receiving free lunch, living or had lived in NYC shelter system, I'm here to ask for your support to help create a safe learning environment that promote social emotion learning.

My Project

In the years of the Covid19 pandemic, lower-income neighborhoods in the United States have been hit the most due to lack of education and healthcare funding. Our school which is located in the South Bronx with many local and commuting students have gone through a traumatic year with many uncertainty and losses. Many of my students have even developed PTSD and mysophobia from going through these negative experiences, some are still skeptical to leave homes to engage in real-life activities. My project's goal to fund a live succulent plant for every student and an Echo dot that acts as our virtual classroom assistant to teach them about plant facts and remind us when to water and change pots. Planting helps students to engage all their senses, enhance fine motor development, introduce them to scientific concepts and teach responsibility. More importantly, this project is based on Social emotional learning (SEL) which helps students of all ages to better comprehend their emotions and demonstrate empathy for others.
