Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the wonder you had the first time you grew your own plant? When we grow plants in class, my students get truly excited at the first signs of green peeking up through the soil. These moments are so important because the rest of their day in our concrete jungle can be so gray.

But, the lack of natural space outdoors won't stop us from creating a plant-friendly environment indoors.

Our school is a small Title I school that sits in the most diverse place in New York City and the United States: Queens. Traveling along the number 7 train, one can hear over a dozen languages spoken by people who have come from all over the world. The hallway of our school is no different. All of my students are immigrants and English Language Learners (ELL's). They come from every part of the globe seeking a new life of opportunity and freedom here in the United States. They come with the hope that education will allow them to meet their full potential. Many of my students have a close relationship with nature and growing plants in their homelands, especially for food. The lack of fresh green produce here in the city is a big change for many that can lead to poor nutrition. Many long just for a taste of home in the form of certain herbs or spices.

My Project

Growing our own vegetables and herbs in soil and hydroponic systems built here in school will be a hands-on way to use students' prior experience with plants to help them learn science and English. At the same time, students can optimize their growing systems to reduce environmental footprint. Bringing food into urban areas like ours has enormous environmental costs: everything from the fuel used in transportation of food to the plastic packaging that accompanies most produce. Another great benefit of growing plants from seeds is that they will beautify and "Green" our building, and we can eat the results!

Not only will these seeds and supplies make a new school and a new country more of a home, but it will provide a source of inspiration for pursuing science and improving the community.

After traveling thousands of miles away from the land where they grew up, my students long for a sense of familiarity to ground them. Caring for green shoots and leaves with their own two hands is a way to give them a piece of earth and place that is their own.
