Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"WHAT? We had homework?" Students are the same everywhere. There's always at least one in the class who will say this every time an assignment is due. I teach all immigrant English Language Learners, so the amazing part is, this phrase is uttered in my class before a lot more common ones.

My students come from over 20 countries and speak a dozen languages.

All are new to the United States, its culture, and all are learning English. Many are from low-income households where their parents are working 2 or 3 jobs just to stay afloat. Their challenge is to meet the same requirements for high school graduation in the same amount of time as native English speakers. To do this, every teacher in our school teaches English in context of their subject area. I teach biology. All classes are project-based, collaborative, and language and content-rich. Using this approach, we graduate ELL's at nearly 3 times the rate of traditional schools.

My Project

Like any high school student though, many of my students need to learn how to keep their binders and their assignments straight. In my experience, the biggest cause of student dropout is not lack of ability or interest, but lack of life skills. If a student has not already learned and practiced the habits of mind necessary for success, it is a big contributor to missing assignments and failed classes. To encourage good organizational skills, I am requesting an inexpensive weekly planner for each student I will teach this year. A planner will give me the tool necessary to teach them how to keep track of assignments and long-term deadlines. Due to budget cutbacks, our school can no longer afford to purchase planners. A simple planner is beyond the means of many of my students. This proposal will ensure that I can provide one for each and every student.

These planners will give me and my students a leg up on practicing time management and organization.

The success we have with these planners now will extend to college, careers, and beyond as they pursue their own American Dream.
