Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 23 energetic fourth graders in my New York City classroom. Many of the children come from low-economic households, but they have big dreams. They understand the importance of a good education. Most of the students attend after-school programs as well, so they spend the majority of their day in school.

My students work both in homogeneous groups and in heterogeneous groups in order to accomplish their daily learning targets.

We not only focus our academic goals, but on our social-emotional goals as well. We are involved with the Leader in Me program and practice our 7 Habits of Happy Kids. We understand that in order to be successful in school, we must always try our best. We motivate each other and work as a team.

My Project

I am so excited to be looping with my students to fifth grade next school year. Fifth grade is departmentalized, therefore we need to teach the children to be a little more organized and independent when it comes to keeping track of their assignments. There will be three classes of 25 fifth graders rotating to three different teachers. I will be teaching Reading, one of my colleagues will be teaching mathematics, and the other writing.

What better way for the fifth graders to efficiently manage their assignments than through writing them on their very own student planners?

They will be able to copy their homework, write down important dates, such as upcoming tests and plan their time wisely. They will develop the satisfaction of checking off items from their to do lists. Parents will effectively be able to locate their homework assignments as well. We know how easy it is to lose small pieces of paper or small notepads that the children often use to copy their homework. With your generous donation we will be able to teach our fifth graders to use their planners with a definite purpose.
