Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a Special Education teacher in a New York City public high school. I teach 9th and 10th grade self-contained English and resource room. The disabilities of my students include speech/language impairments, ADHD, dyslexia, Asperger's, severe emotional disturbance, and more. All of my students are bright, motivated people who need that extra push to succeed. I am touched and inspired by their ability to face these tremendous obstacles.

I spent the first week of school teaching my resource room students about organization. I recommended that every student buy a daily planner to write down his or her assignments and keep track of due dates. Although my students agreed that this was a good idea, they indicated that they did not have the money to buy a planner. As an alternative, I decided to provide my students with blank weekly calendar pages to write down their assignments. This worked as a temporary solution. I am now realizing that planners are crucial for my students because they tend to misplace these loose pages. I believe a real planner would be more effective because it is less likely to be misplaced and a student can find all of the assignments written down in one location.

I would use the planner as a tool to teach students organization, time management, and responsibility. Each student should be held accountable for his or her work. Students often tell me that they "forgot to copy the homework down" or they "can't find where they copied the homework." These can no longer be used as excuses and this is the message I hope to send to students when they receive their planners.

Your help will ensure that my students learn the importance of organization. Your donation would provide my students with the resources they need to become responsible for their own learning. My special education students need additional tools such as daily planners to provide structure and routine in their academic lives.
