Plankton Wars!

My Students

The best part about our school is how diverse the population is. We have 4000 students, with roughly equal representation of ethnicities! It is a Title I school: most of our students are below the federal poverty line.

The students make friends from everywhere in Brooklyn and throughout NYC.

It's a joyful place to work. We have supportive administration, lots of clubs (teachers volunteer to lead them). We just need a little more money to make things excellent!

My Project

Plankton Wars is a really fun lab we use to end Semester 1. Kids learn about Diel Vertical Migration, and work together to create a neutrally buoyant plankter from a washer!

It's really fun and they get so creative and competitive.

The graduated cylinders are used as the racing vessel and the washers represent the basic bodily organs of a plankton.

Then I buy and bring in all sorts of crazy materials from home that they are allowed to experiment with to make their plankter neutrally buoyant (suspended in the water without floating to the surface NOR sinking to the bottom).
