I teach science to all grades, K-5, at our small elementary school. The students come to the science lab once a week for 1 hour or more each visit. Our school has a wide range of students in its population. We serve neighborhood children, military families, and students from areas of higher poverty that ride the bus to our school by choice. We have a large percentage of free lunch students and many English language learners. While our elementary classrooms focus on all academic areas, my science lab is dedicated to the enrichment and enjoyment of science.

Our school is working to take some ecological steps to leave less of a carbon footprint. We have begun a recycling program, and we have had several lessons on ways we can conserve. Our next avenue will be to conquer the small garden that has not been utilized to its full potential. The students have a clear enthusiasm to work outside, but our program needs a little help getting started.

We have planter boxes already installed, but it is not in the best location for visiting. We would like to make it a more of a "draw" by making some additions, but also getting the kids more involved. I think that beginning a lunch waste/composting program with our students will be very rewarding, but will also help to teach the students about other ways that we can reduce, reuse, and recycle. We need some supplies that will bring the soil "to life," including a guide for using lunchroom scraps, soil lessons, viewers to help us see things more clearly, and a pond to make our garden more inviting...while also teaching life science and water conservation/reuse.

Your donation will help to plant the seed of environmental friendly behaviors and create a community of "Planet Protectors."
