My Students

Can you possibly have a marine aquatics class without getting your feet wet? I feel the only way to understand a subject is to get into its real world environment!

I have large classes but some of the best students on the coast.

We strive to investigate, discuss and dissect everything related to marine environments. My marine students always work very hard on their assignments and are more than deserving of a new set of nets for our beach field experiences. We are in a new school in the heart of the gulf coast. These students are very diverse in race, culture, and socioeconomic status, but as a class we come together to learn all of the aspects of a world with fish.

My Project

My students will be using the nets and kick nets when leaving campus and exploring an aquatic ecosystem. It tends to break up their normal day and make them excited about coming to school and building up to the point of the field experiences. The students will use cast nets, seine nets, dip nets, and kick nets to collect potential fish specimens. We will be breaking into blocks (33 kids per block) and spending the class period categorizing the species and collecting them for our classroom aquariums. The students are going to be required to collect one specimen from each phylum of species we have discussed so far this year. The students will then use the animals in a year long study on the interactions with different species in a controlled environment. The nets we currently have are old and torn; new nets will keep our catch from escaping!

Kids have lost the want and desire to spend all of their time outside.

By exciting them and showing them new and exciting school-related activities, they enjoy being outside finding fish, snails, crabs, shrimp and other small creatures in and around our Mississippi sound.
