Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Kindergarten is a year full of excitement and discovery. My students are learning how to navigate school while navigating a second language. Reading, writing, adding, subtracting, number bonds, volume, habitats, the sun's effect on the Earth, and plant and animal needs are just a few of the concepts my students learn at the age of five or six.

Despite their limited school experience and young age, it is important to get my students excited about STEM now.

My students come to school ready to internalize every new bit of information they can, but it is important for them to be engaged in their learning in order to retain the numerous concepts they are learning.

My Project

While the old way of teaching concentrated on a teacher-centered approach where students learned everything they had to know through textbooks, there has been a shift in educational practices that encourage us to offer more student-led learning opportunities in our classroom. In order to pique my students' interest in STEM fields, such as engineering, environmental science, architecture, etc., it is important to introduce these careers in an engaging manner.

My students will become environmental engineers as they work to save a (rubber) duck from a polluted pond.

They are currently learning about living things, and soon they will explore animal habitats and ecosystems, our impact on the environment, and environmental leadership as they engineer their own trash collectors.

Students will be presented with their own polluted pond (a roasting pan filled with water and pom poms to represent trash) and wind-up duck. Using household items, such as: aluminum foil, ladles, spatulas, clothespins, kitchen towels, and foam sheets, students will create trash collectors to clear the pond of pollution as quickly and efficiently as possible. They will then write a letter about and send pictures of their invention to inform other environmental scientists about their design.

Through early exposure to STEM, I hope to spark my students' innate curiosity in real-world issues and equip them with the tools necessary to begin to tackle some of the problems affecting our environment on their own.
