My Students

Our school is a public, transfer high school that offers internships and in-house classes. Our students are artsy, musical, and curious about the world. They are very into hands-on projects and learning experientially. Our school is also in the consortium, so our students create a portfolio for graduation of their best projects.

Our talented, musical, artistic students often come from schools where they have encountered some type of obstacle in their success.

Our goal is to make projects connect to their world so they can see the importance of learning about science. In our classes, students first learn about the subject and then use what they learned to design their own experiments. The scientific paper they write can be edited multiple times and presented in front of a panel as one of their graduation requirements.

My Project

Have you ever wondered how a pillbug makes decisions? If not, we all should because pillbugs are decomposers who eat a certain type of fungi that contributes heavily to global warming.

How can we find out what type of food a pillbug prefers?

Whether they prefer damp or dry dirt? Well, our students are finding out the answers to these questions and creating beautiful research reports with graphs, analyses and conclusions.

The only thing we need is more choice chambers so everyone can do the experiment at the same time. Extra choice chambers will make our classroom even more alive!
