Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are energetic, eager to learn, and in need of sensory input! They face challenges communicating and interacting with others. With your help, they will have new communication books to be used in order to build language and communication skills.
I am a speech-language pathologist in a large urban district located in a high-need community.
I provide direct speech-language services to 50 wonderful children in self-contained classrooms ranging from pre-k to second grade. Our district is located in a high poverty area and has a very tight budget. Therefore, materials and supplies are often hard to come by.
My students present with a wide range of communication delays and deficits that are both verbal and nonverbal in nature. My students require visual supports and strategies to enhance their understanding and support their language learning. We work together each day to provide a safe, respectful, happy, and nurturing community in the classrooms so learning can occur in the most effective way.
My Project
For my children, verbal communication is not always an easy task. Many of my students communicate through picture exchange. Our voices go wherever we go, so my students need picture exchange communication books to ensure that their voices are heard across different settings.
Communication should not stop once a child leaves the classroom.
These books will be created into picture communication books that will give my children endless opportunities to express themselves throughout their entire day especially during play time, meals, bathroom, bedtime and morning routines. My students have a lot to say and these books will allow them to effectively communicate. Most children's first words are a momentous occasion, and, by donating to this project, you will contribute to their successes.
