Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our school is located in an inner-city area, with a student population of over 900 children and is 98% Hispanic. It is a Title 1 school (90% or more receive free or reduced lunch) in a neighborhood where children have few opportunities to experience Science concepts outside the classroom. The majority of my students are English Language Learners.

Our children do not have technology resources at home, so they are limited to using computers and other technology applications at school. Many times, we go on outdoor field experiences and the students need to document what they see in their science journals. We have one digital camera for our class, but with 25 students in a class, it is difficult for each child to have an opportunity to work with the equipment.

Having more digital cameras would allow the children to work in groups to document their experiments and record them on our class website. Additionally, they will be able to create podcasts and online journals with the pictures they take.

The children at our school have very few technology resources at home, so school is the only place they are able to learn the technology skills they will need to compete with students in suburban schools. Your donation will help to ensure that my students are on a "level playing field" and have the learning opportunities they deserve.
