This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is a Title I school. Eighty percent of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch and come from low income families.
The school where I work is a BISO, (Bilingual School Organization), where 60% of the day is taught in English and 40% in Spanish.
Our mission statement is to "bilingually foster student achievement with respect for historical, cultural and individual diversities with an emphasis on the preservation of our environment and an appreciation for the arts."
My job is to teach young citizens to be bilingual/biliterate. My class consists of forty four Kindergarten students. I have twenty two students in the morning and twenty two students in the afternoon, ranging from five to six years of age. The majority of our students are English Language Learners (ELL) whose parents have migrated to the USA from around the world. Technology for them is a luxury, therefore, most parents can’t afford to purchase computers, digital cameras, or video cameras for the home.
My Project
"Making Magic Happen" is our school wide theme. Teaching my little ones that with the use of creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking we all can make the magic happen. My students are very interested and motivated by all types of technology. Hence, we are soaring to achieve the maximum success of learning with the use of technologies we have today.
We are all familiar with the phrase “A picture is worth a thousand words”.
That being said, is what I want to accomplish in my class with the use of a digital camera. Students like to visually see themselves and their friends in pictures and videos. My students do very well with the use of visuals throughout the day. With pictures and/or videos I would be able to document positive behavior during recess, collaborating, sharing, taking turns, having conversations, and the outcome of using magic words such as Thank You, Please, and Excuse me.
Having a digital camera would allow my students create a connection with the culture of their peers as well as their own. My students have their own individual needs. By using a digital Camera/video their communication, reading and mathematics skills, would be much more enhanced thus helping them soar to new heights of thinking, interacting, and creating.
Furthermore, having the technology of a digital camera/video would be a great way to record events held in my classroom such as Grandparents Day, Draw with Daddy, Holidays, Mothers Day breakfast, field trips, Earth Day, etc. The possibilities of the events and the use of the digital camera are endless with this technology readily available to them.
By supporting this project you would be enabling my little ones to further their education and allow them to explore and engage in our emerging world with technology.
