This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from low socio-economic homes. They enter kindergarten with limited English and have limited support at home. I build rapport with both students and families to create a home-school working relationship to help their child improve.

Hands-on activities, visuals, songs with hand movements, and videos help my students with language acquisition and learning.

Having little to no language support at home makes their language acquisition challenging. I use eclectic approaches at teaching--integrating various forms of media--to help maximize instruction.

My Project

Struggling Kindergarten students who are learning to speak English rely on hand gestures and visuals to help them acquire the language. The Graphics Tablet will allow me to gear instruction to meet the needs of my most needy students. Many of the centers/games we use in kindergarten are geared toward native English speaking children. My English language learners struggle with games that use pictures to show words like "wink," "wept," "hog," etc. I'd like to create my own colorful (because color does matter) realistic vocabulary games. Before children can learn words like wink, wept, and hog, they must first understand basic vocabulary like blink, cry, and pig. They have to have a foundation to build upon. Many of the games/centers and worksheets are too advanced for my struggling students.

I would like to use the Graphics Tablet to create my own worksheets, homework, activities, and centers/games.

I know what my students needs are; being able to target their individual needs would be so much more beneficial than using already made games geared for the average English speaking kindergarten student.
