My Students

My school currently serves approximately 350 students in grades 6-8. My students come from homes with range from farms to public housing and everything in between. Most are from economically disadvantaged homes, as 100% of our students receive a free breakfast, lunch, and after school dinner.

Our motto here is that we are a "family." The students and staff alike have bought into this message of respect and compassion.

We provide them with a safe learning environment and try to meet each and every student's academic and personal needs. We feel if they are safe and comfortable, there are no limits to what they can achieve.

Our students have overcome many hardships by the time they come to us in the 8th grade. As a teacher, you set out to make a difference thinking you have something to offer your students, when in reality, it is often the students that do the most teaching.

My Project

This activity actually has several different benefits. First and foremost, our students will have the opportunity to view Science in a hands-on and engaging manner. Our guest speaker from the Bayer Corporation performs many experiments at our after-school family night that the students also have an opportunity to participate in themselves. I was inspired by Mrs. I's project, "Chemistry in our World" and wanted to achieve the same principals

This activity allows us to invite our community members and our parents and gives both an opportunity to become directly involved in our students' education.

We are always trying to find ways to incorporate parental and community involvement into our school, and this is a great combination to do both at a time when both are available.

Adding the camera gives us a way to incorporate technology into this activity. The students will be able to create a digital portfolio of the experiments, the results, and their own learning throughout the presentation. In their future, digital portfolios will be more widely used. This is a great opportunity to expose them to this aspect of education early!
