My Students

The students who I work with come from all countries, background and ethnicities; majority of them are bilingual, whose families are Spanish- or Cambodian-speakers. The students that are in my classroom are preschool and pre-kindergarten age, some of whom have or have had an IEP for speech or other developmental delays. Some of my students have single parents who highly depend on our school for the language, education, and safety of their children.

Many of my students are in school for the very first time and have never received formal instruction.

Keeping them engaged has been a challenge, but all hope is not gone. They strive through our days with mini-successes one day at a time. The more interactive my lessons are and the more involved they are in each activity, the more successful they are. To have the right materials for such a young age-group and all 18 students has been my challenge thus far, but with some time and money, they are worth every cent and hour and second and everything after that.

My Project

Half of my students are moving on to Kindergarten this school year and most of them do not recognize the basics of reading; letter recognition and letter sounds. Of course, there is a range of those who are ready for reading comprehension and sequencing. My students would definitely benefit from an interactive, yet structured, game-like way of learning all kinds of literacy skills through these picture-based word cards to guide them as beginner readers. As we all know, picture readers are readers, too!

I would like to introduce more fun ways to learning to my young students, most of whom have a very short attention span, but show a lot of potential when given the chance.
