My Students

Have you ever heard of the saying "First impressions are the ones that last." Well, this is a saying that I am trying to instill into the hearts and minds of my students in order that they have greater opportunities to excel in life based on how they present themselves to others.

I work in an elementary school with low income students who are mainly of African American and Hispanic descent.

Many of these students do not fluently speak, write or understand English even though many were born and raised speaking the language. There seems to be a disconnect with the proper way to communicate the language.

My Project

This project is designed to inspire and motivate students in grades 3-5 in the art of public speaking. It will also expose them to a wide genre of poetry with instructional guidance on how to analyze poems as well as give immediate feedback on their analysis. The goal is to challenge students to critically analyze poetic writings, authentically create their own poems and verbally express themselves in the form of public speaking. The academic objective is to increase reading, writing and vocabulary skills which can allow students to achieve their best possible FCAT scores while improving communication skills. According to research poetry has been confirmed to improve literacy skills (Gable, 1999). During the month of February, students will meet three times a week in order to gain exposure to various forms of poetry and poets via group discussions/performances. Then they will perform for the school and be video taped and have their performance broadcast for their peers to view.

Having the opportunity to video record the students and have them see themselves and critique themselves as well as each other would maximize their ability to exemplify and improve their speaking and communication skills while giving them the confidence they will need to present themselves in the real world.
