My Students

Each class has 25 students and we currently have 4 cameras. They have one week to take photos in art. If we had more cameras, they would have more opportunities to take photos for art, yearbook, advertisements, and other classes. The kids love photography!

All 8th graders are required to take art.

They love the photo unit, but every student asks that they get more time with the cameras. We use the pictures that students take in photography for slide-shows, advertisements, websites, other art projects, etc. The kids are amazing photographers! They love the freedom to take a camera outside and learn all about composition, manual exposure, careers using photography, marketing and selling photos, professional image editing, and time-lapse creation. They are advanced beyond the typical 8th grade and would greatly benefit from the proper materials. These students love to use their work to promote caring for others in the community.

My Project

Many of my students find their one highlight of school to be the creative outlet of art class. They are given the freedom to express themselves visually. My class is often directed towards art therapy activities, focusing on the therapeutic uses of art. It is a stress reliever for over worked teenagers. When given a camera, these students can show their thoughts and emotions through a photo. My strongest artists and photographers are usually students who struggle academically. It is a great reward for them to succeed in school and have their final projects shown throughout the building, in the community, and on the Internet. Not only are these students expressing themselves in a healthy way, they are also learning about composition, elements and principles of design, the science and power of light, history of photographers and artists, manual functions of a camera, professional editing software, and selling photos through freelance art and stock photography.

This project is very important for my students because they need an outlet for expression at such a critical age.

They learn the most vital information of art through a fun and interactive medium. Photography promotes responsibility, self-directed learning, problem solving, self-confidence, physical fitness, creative thinking, and an be adapted to promote every other subject in school. When these students learn the basics of photography, they create beautiful images, and soar with success!
