I am a reading interventionist servicing grades K-3rd. I service students struggling with reading, which unfortunately means most of the school. They have a difficult time reading simple words that we see everyday "what, where, house." We call these words sight words because they should be recognized by sight without having to sound them out. These words are important to know since they are used in pretty much everything we read and my students need this foundation. Already many of my students are a year behind because after Katrina they were either not in school or attended several schools during that year. It feels like I am trying to play catch up with their skills and these materials will help them in the area of reading. Developed by a school psychologist (formerly a first grade teacher) "Picture Me Reading!" is a unique "visual-conceptual technique of embedding pictorial cues within the high frequency words. Concepts pictured within the words are recalled when the pictures no longer are present. The learner recognizes the word without the need of phonics. The games and activities included with these packages provide a truly multi-modal approach. This is great tool to help my students memorize these words because whenever they see the word they learned in another context they will remember the story and the picture that accompanied that sight word. The pictures will also help my Second Language Learners with learning these words since the pictures are universal. The books and flashcards will be used daily with my intervention students. I hope you decide to donate these materials to my class. It would benefit them greatly and help boost their reading skills.
