Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine moving to a new country. You walk into a classroom and you may not have ever had any formal education before. You have never read or written and you have this teacher and classmates talking to you in a language you don't understand. These are the students I teach every day.

I work in a Title I school with a very high immigrant population.

Many of my students have very limited schooling in their own language and are now thrust into a formal school setting. We move from learning letters to reading very quickly. We help students learn English while giving them the chance to work at a pace that’s challenging for them without it being too overwhelming. My students come from all around the world, from many different and often difficult situations. They hold the American Dream, but need the tools to make them successful.

My Project

My students struggle the most with listening, speaking, and reading. Most of my students are often challenged with learning a new language and they lack the confidence and vocabulary to speak to native peers. I'm requesting engaging picture books that I can read to them during read-aloud. My students will be able to listen to thought-provoking stories that can enhance their listening speaking, and reading skills.

In my classroom, my students have daily listening, speaking, and reading, opportunities that promote second language acquisition and character values.

The addition of these picture books would result in an increase in student engagement and better understanding of the text that can facilitate better listening and conversational skills.
