My Students

"Education is the most powerful weapon for changing the world," Nelson Mandela famously said. Help these future innovators, contributors, and leaders gain the knowledge, skills, and experiences to improve our world. My students come from neighborhoods across the Omaha metro. In our unique public school, students develop their technology, leadership, and communication skills. In our extended, year-round program, students are engaged in inquiry, STEAM, voluminous reading, and innovative instruction. Every student also participates in after-school Enrichment, where they may choose from a wide variety of extracurricular courses.

Our students are curious, creative, and committed to leading in our school and communities.

They are curious about the world and how it works. They are creative in their approaches to learning and how they use tools and technology to communicate. They demonstrate their commitment to leadership inside and outside the school by participation and service. Our students are future world-changers. They are amazing.

My Project

In my 6th grade classroom, I share a picture book with the students every day.

Think picture books are just for the littles?

No way! #classroombookaday is a nationwide movement to get delightful, informative, diverse stories to students of all ages.

Sharing over 170 complete stories with my students, that we can discuss and refer back to, has been an incredibly powerful way to model fluency, enhance listening skills, build community, and develop empathy.

Beyond the standards, my students re-learned how to enjoy a story, how to appreciate the art of picture books, how to sit back and be read to for the pure joy of hearing and sharing stories. Many of them commented that it helped them to forget the stresses of school for a few minutes every day, to calm down from whatever was happening outside our classroom and refocus.
