My Students

"Read it again, teacher!" The power of a great picture book is vast. It can draw in a reluctant reader, inspire a tuned-out student, and electrify thinking in kids who struggle to decode words on a page. A great picture book can unite a diverse class of squirmy 8-year-olds into a learning community.

My incoming third grade students attend a small urban public elementary school in New York.

They will stay with me for both third and fourth grades, and I'm really looking forward to working with them for the next two years. They are an extremely diverse group, in terms of ethnic background, socioeconomic status, and special education needs. In order for us to work together successfully and happily for two years, we need to form a classroom community in which students can learn, create, and share their ideas freely in an atmosphere of respect and curiosity.

My Project

Our classroom has been fortunate in receiving grants for the chapter books my students are beginning to embark on in their independent reading. What we need now are rich and complex picture books, both fiction and non-fiction. When I read a picture book aloud to the class, my students have the opportunity to share an experience that makes a huge difference to them both in terms of reading comprehension and relating to others. They will learn specific comprehension skills such as activating background knowledge, summarizing, and making inferences. Just as important, they will learn from our class discussions how to express themselves clearly and how to understand and respect others' interpretations. They will build a common body of knowledge and experience that forms the foundation of any learning community.

Reading books like "Teammates" by Peter Golenbeck, about the relationship between Jackie Robinson and Peewee Reese, or "When I Was Young in the Mountains," Cynthia Rylant's peaceful childhood memories, will bring my students together as a community of people devoted to learning and supporting each other.

I have no doubt that these books will enrich the academic and social learning of my incoming group of students, as well as those I will teach in future years.
