My Students

I believe that students learn by making connections and having access to literature. I use picture books in many of my Language Arts and Math lessons to help teach the standards in a new way that will grab their attention and help them make those connections to their lives.

I teach second grade in Nashville, Tennessee.

This is only my second year in second grade. My school is a Title I, urban public school. Most of my students come from poverty or homes that are just making "ends" meet. This year I have a group of very sweet, energetic second graders. My parents are very supportive and are doing what they can to help their children be successful in school. I want my students to have access to text and literature as much as they can. This is one of the many reasons I try try to incorporate it into my lessons whenever I can.

My Project

I will use these books as teaching tools in my lessons in both Language Arts and Math. My students love being read to and enjoy discussing the texts as we read. These books would address the standards I have not been able to purchase books for yet. I plan to incorporate the books both at the beginning of my lessons and throughout the units.

The books help students see a visual example of the standards that are different and often real-life that allow them to make connections.

Throughout the lessons, both the students and I often refer back to the books we have read as they have made those connections and it helps with their understanding. They love to read the books again on their own as well for review. These books help teach and reinforce skills in ways that videos, worksheets, and textbooks cannot!
