My Students

"Can we play the guitars today?" "What about today?" "I can't wait to play the guitar!!!" Before I began 4th and 5th grade guitar club, my students couldn't contain their excitement. Now that it has started, the enthusiasm remains. What we don't have, however, are picks, tuners, and stands.

At my school, students have the opportunity to explore music through many different instruments: their voice, keyboards, violin, and last by not least, the guitar.

My school received a classroom set of acoustic Fender guitars through a phenomenal program called "LIttle Kids Rock." With the guitars, we have started a relaxed, move at your own pace Guitar Club that students choose to come to during their recess break once a week. In this guitar class, we write songs, collaborate, and broaden our knowledge of music. Students are encouraged to bring in music they are interested in learning into the classroom for everyone to learn!

My Project

Guitar picks, tuners, and stands will ensure that there is more time to learn then guitar and less time spent on setting up the guitar. While playing the guitar is fun, tuning can often take a long time. Having tuners available for students will not only help them learn to turn their guitar, but make the process faster over all. Picks will add diversity to the sound students are able to make with their instruments - they will have the choice of pick or no pick. (And let me tell you - I have a feeling they'll all choose picks at first!) Stands will allow instruments to be easily stored when not is use.

The positive benefits of playing an instrument are numerous.

Music education develops a child’s 21st century skills through encouraging creativity and fostering collaboration and self-expression. Additionally, the hands-on process of learning technique encourages cognitive development and skills that transfer to reading and math, such as critical thinking. Music education should be accessible to every child. Help our guitar club grow in size and spirit!
