A typical day in my 5th and 6th grade art class greets me with the challenge of quickly engaging students to produce a work of art they are proud of while meeting state art mandates. Meeting standards of collaboration in a diverse and inclusive setting requires highly engaging and meaningful lessons. Stop Motion Claymation to solve word problems would meet not only art and math standards, but collaborative standards and behavioral goals!
Allowing students hands-on activities that combine math and art STEAM activities may provide students and teachers with a new appreciation for the visual arts as an academic resource.
My school is wonderful about encouraging and incorporating the arts in every classroom. We want our students to develop a love for the visual arts and be able to use their talents to stand out!
5th and 6th grade students are very energetic and love to socialize! My school is upbeat and encourages that energy to maintain engaging lessons. We learn and review content as much as possible from bell to bell!
My Project
Hue Animation Studios has won several awards for it's effectiveness and ease of use by children of all ages. Students will use the studios to animate math concepts using stop motion claymation. This project will cover many objectives, including collaborative learning and behavioral goals.
The diverse learning needs of my art classes will be met through careful collaboration, planning, jobs based on strengths, and creative examples and demonstrations of math concepts.
Students must understand the use of three dimensional figures, are required to plan projects, and develop relevant criteria to evaluate art. This draws in higher order thinking skills while developing claymation videos to teach such 5th and 6th grade math concepts as visual fractions, math stories and word problems, and representing ratios and 3-D figures.
