About My Students

My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. And although most of their circumstances are not by choice, my students come to school each day to learn something new and make strides toward academic improvement.

They are excited to explore and make discoveries in their mathematical journey, as well as expand their capacity for critical and higher-order thinking. Even when they hit an uncomfortable spot, they take pride in their efforts and are willing to challenge their minds for the sake of learning while preparing to be productive citizens of our society.

Everything I do in my classroom is based on research and best practices for students. And research shows that Flexible Seating has a number of benefits for our students such as increased motivation and engagement through student choice and the ability to meet the needs of the individual learners. Flexible seating allows students to physically become more comfortable while they are learning-creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. Redesigning a classroom or implementing unassigned flexible seating is a shift in both structure and teaching philosophy, which is pretty much an entire mindset shift. And I want my students to experience their learning process with a growth mindset and become more self-aware of what types of seating and environment help them learn better. My ultimate goal is to provide a classroom environment where students love coming to school, take ownership, and are invested in their learning.

In Their Own Words

"We would like to have a shared classroom where it feels like it is “ours” instead of just feeling like we are in our teacher's classroom. We would love the opportunity to move around and get comfortable when learning. We want to be supported and understood in the classroom while having a little more freedom, just as we will when we go off to college."

"We will continue to work together in collaborative and cooperative groups as our teacher emphasizes daily. But with flexible seating, we will become student leaders as we get to work more closely with our peers on solving problems. We will also have the power to be student leaders by showing positive behavior and not distracting others in the classroom since we will be so focused on the tasks presented to us - and comfortably working to achieve our learning goals and objectives."

"This project is important to our classroom and school community because math is a hard subject, which can get boring and frustrating to learn. Mrs. Alexander always tells us to make sense of the problems, persevere through the tasks, use our resources, and justify our reasoning. And although we strive to work hard and improve our academic performance, it's very hard to do those things when other students are sitting so close to you or kicking your feet because they are trying to stretch- for example. We are easily distracted so if given the proper space and resources, we will be able to learn at our best levels and begin to reach our greatest potential."
