Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a special education reading intervention teacher working with groups of struggling or non-readers. I teach at a school where over 97% of the students qualify for free lunch/reduced-price lunch. My students are growing up in a school district that is identified as the poorest congressional district in our city where most of the families are living below the poverty line.

My students are identified as struggling readers and writers and often lose focus during learning for reasons beyond their control.

I also support a group of dedicated and enthusiastic PreK3s (yes 3 year olds!) and with them and my upper grades I'm helping them develop socially and emotionally. My students are very hard-working and even though most of them live in a community facing extreme poverty, they come to class dedicated to work.

School is their refuge and a place to find their voice. Many of my students have disabilities, specifically: learning disabilities, speech & language disabilities, ADHD and autism. I want classroom resources that allow them access to their learning and to teach them strategies to manage their disabilities and gain independence over their own learning and find a voice!

My Project

This project will help to bring art back into the classroom. My students will be able to use the scented markers to add vibrant colors to their self-portraits and other activities we will complete. They will use the paints and brushes to “paint their emotions" and express themselves. The aprons would help to keep their school uniform clean and protected.

They will be able to create projects that reflect their understanding of literacy and illustrate them using markers and paint.

They will be able to create sketches and drawings and illustrate their own stories. Research shows that students learn better in a multi-sensory environment where they can be creative and their inquiring minds can explore. With your generosity I could provide opportunities to really help extend my students' minds and their thinking through art.
