Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an application-only school. Each student has passed an audition and declared a major to attend from sixth to twelfth grade. My students are a teacher's dream; they come to me wanting to learn.

While they come to school with a variety of parental involvement, support, or emotional health, all of my students need the resources to do their classwork.

These are brilliant minds, but they are still kids. They are still afraid to admit they do not have paper, a pencil, or if they forgot their binder. My job is not to judge them, but to provide them with the tools they need so they can show me what they can do!

Whether my class is a requirement for their major or they have chosen it for an elective, all students show excitement at getting piano lessons from their public, inner city school.

My Project

A large part of my piano class is teaching students how to practice. Practice is necessary to learn any skill - be it piano, computers, medicine, law, or any other skill. Practice is the part of piano study that many experts cite when they claim that children who study piano are smarter, score better on tests, and have less to no anxiety when having to present ideas to others. Practice is what produces those benefits.

Do you look back and wish you had learned piano?

Many adults do, and our students have that opportunity now! While most of my students have a piano or digital piano outside of school for practice, there are usually two to three who are unable to get an instrument. They either spend a frustrating year without progress and a bruised self esteem, or take a different elective. My classroom is open to them for practice, but they have other responsibilities outside of my class. It is much more practical for them to be able to practice on their own schedule.

Your donation will go towards providing two keyboards for checking out to students in need for the school year. There would be a form in place for accountability and care of the equipment, and instruments would be returned so that this program can continue to benefit others in the same position.
