Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a large high school (1700 students) in a rural area. Our Computer Science classes are still quite new. The Introduction to Computer science class, now in its third year, hava been working with Raspberry Pi (micro computers) as their main device for learning the Python programming language.

We are the older, and now smaller, of two comprehensive high schools in our district.

Our students are mainly second language, and the majority of them qualify for free or reduced rate lunch. Many of them will be the first ones in their family to attend college.

My Project

Building a robotic vehicle. This is a really cool project / idea. I know that we can buy a kit and just build it, but where is the learning in that? So we are going to build our car, step by step, one component at a time until it is done.

Each sensor we use brings a different skill set, and new code to learn.

But this project focuses on motion. Getting the motors set up and running, that is the goal. The motor boards are the backbone to control the motors (the Raspberry Pi does not provide enough output on their own to run the motors). The motors, well, they are motors that drive the wheels. But the fun begins when we put it all together and have the Raspberry Pi start controlling the motors.

Giving our students the tools to start building the cars, that is the key part of this project. Then we add Distance Sensors, and Line Following Sensors (but that is another project) and we move to building a programmable robot buggy.
