Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach three sections of 7th grade Integrated Science, one section of Physics, one section of Chemistry and International Baccalaureate Physics with a total of 175 students. My school is located in an urban area and has 2900 students in it. Our school is the oldest one in the city.

My students are a diverse mix of low and high-income urban students.

They represent many ethnic and racial groups. I also teach a wide array of classes.

I teach physics, biology, chemistry, earth science, Advanced Placement, and International Baccalaureate Physics. The students all love applied science and hands-on activities.

My Project

My students are learning from home this year as our school has gone 100 percent virtual. I'm building science kits so that they can do experiments at home. The assortment of balls will be used to study period motion (pendulums), conservation of momentum, collisions, free falling objects, kinematics and motion.

I'm planning on using the thermometers to study thermodynamic labs in my course, including calorimetry, temperature calibration and states of matter labs.

They will also be used in determining absolute zero using pressurized syringes.

Finally, the set of anemometers will be used in the unit on meteorology where students get field experience measuring weather. These tools will also be used in a unit where students build wind turbines for climate science.
