This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach six sections of 7th grade Integrated Science and International Baccalaureate physics with a total of 161 students. My school is located in an urban area and has 2900 students in it. Our school is the oldest one in the city.

My students are a diverse mix of low and high-income urban students.

They represent many ethnic and racial groups. I also teach a wide array of classes.

I teach physics, biology, chemistry, earth science, Advanced Placement, and International Baccalaureate Physics. The students all love applied science and hands-on activities.

My Project

My students are working with stands and mass sets that are falling apart. New ring stands, mass sets, and stopwatches will help students complete a variety of experiments in physics and integrated science. I noticed that many of my students do not have cell phones, which I traditionally use for timers in kinematics. I'd like to add stopwatches to my lab equipment to provide an alternative for low-income students.

My students will use mass sets and ring stands to study the period of pendulums, stretch springs in Hooke's Law studies, and study equilibrium in our forces unit.

The masses are also used in studies of collisions, energy, and momentum in conjunction with dynamics carts. Ring stands are also used to support and demonstrate optical and wave phenomena.
