My Students

No physics class is complete without the study of acceleration: down a ramp and in free fall. Did you ever get the chance to discover gravitational force for yourself? Help give my students the thrill of creating their knowledge, instead of just ingesting it!

My students have the passion for physics, but not the lab equipment to go with it.

Research shows investigation and discovery surpass all other methods of instruction. In my classroom, students observe, plan, measure, analyze, and discover the physics for themselves. No lecture for us! Then students must present their findings as professional scientists do. However, with equipment mostly ancient, broken, or both, we struggle to do basic investigations. Updated equipment would give us better data to analyze and learn from as well as more time to do advanced labs or other enrichment activities.

My Project

With additional motion detectors and photogates my students can collect more accurate and sophisticated data to explore uniform acceleration of objects both in free fall and on a ramp. With technology, these classroom concepts become applicable to the real world. Students heard about gravity, but now they have measured gravitational force for themselves! Galileo may have gotten there first, but each of my students is just as proud of his/her discovery. Students not only discover universal laws, but also use them to make and test predictions. With more copy paper, students can print out their lab reports and data for class discussion. Our classwide review of lab reports prepares them to debate and defend ideas like real scientists.

Strong science preparation increases the chance that students will succeed in college.

Experiments empower students to develop critical thinking skills and interpersonal skills, skills for studying and for life. Tough labs and challenging problems not only prepare students for college, but also convince them that they can and will achieve their goals. Help my young scientists bring physics alive and prepare for a rigorous and successful college experience
