My students need informational books about how physics works on roller coasters and amusement park rides, books about magnets, and materials to experiment in each topic.

Leonardo Da Vinci once said, "I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we MUST apply. Being willing is not enough; we MUST do." I want my students
to apply the Laws of Physics to create their own Physics Fun Park for our Spring Exhibition!
We are a hybrid public charter school in which the students come to school two days a week while being home schooled three days a week.
The students are inventors, innovators, artists, programmers, and problem solvers. These students are third and fourth grade combination classes who have many talents and hobbies. Their curriculum is project-based learning in which they are presented a challenging question to ponder, research, and act upon in a collaborative way. The students present their project twice a year during our school-wide Exhibition Nights to which the local community and industry partners are welcomed.
My Project
The students will use the informational texts to gain a better understanding of the Laws of Physics, magnets, electricity, and how all of these physical science concepts are needed to create and run an amusement park, as well as, completing daily life chores and privileges we often take for granted. Students will work in groups to experiment with the magnet kits, circuit kits, and roller coaster kits to apply the Laws of Physics, electricity, and magnetism. From these examples, students will create their own Physics Fun Park for our Spring Exhibition by creating games that incorporate magnets, electricity and the Laws of Physics, while also creating roller coasters from different materials. It is my goal that students will be able to explain and apply the Laws of Physics behind the games.
Have you ever wondered why something works, but have never acted upon it?
By knowing WHY something works will allow students to have a deeper connection to science. By showing students how the Laws of Physics work through these different experiments, students will remember the "experience" of each law and apply it to their daily lives. Having these informational texts become a permanent addition to our class library will allow students to refer to these books through the year and in the future.
