My Students

My students range from 13 to 20 years of age. They are boys and girls who speak a variety of first languages. They attend an urban high school within the poorest region of the city. Twenty-one point seven percent are English learners. 100 percent are economically disadvantaged and receive free or reduced-price lunch.

School provides a safe environment for most of the students.

As such, it should be a place they look forward to because of the activities within and without class. Due to budget cuts, the school does not purchase equipment to support additional co curricula activities. 35 students have expressed interest in a Physical Fitness/Boxing Program but the school lacks sufficient equipment and tools to support this program.

My Project

Our students live in an unsafe neighborhood. Most of the students come from a single parent family. In addition, the parents work for long hours to provide basic needs for their families. As such, the parents cannot afford to pay for programs to occupy their children after school hours.

A fitness/boxing program allow students to engage in physical activity and make them look forward to come to school.

It is a safe place for the students to be after school hours away from bad influences especially in absence of working parents. The team skills, resilience and commitment required in boxing are transferable skills that will improve the students learning experience.

The twelve sets of boxing gloves and six head gear will provide protection as students practice and compete in various boxing events. The students cannot participate in these after school activities without the protective gear. Most of their parents cannot afford to buy these protective gear for the students. If these items are available, then the students can enroll in the after school boxing club and stay out of trouble. The students' boxing coach is a school support staff who is volunteering to train the students for free. He has been relying on donations to provide the equipment required to sustain the program.
