My Students

My students are elementary school students between the ages of 5-10 years old and have a variety of special needs and disabilities such as autism. They love to play sports and participate in physical education activities which promote health, wellness, and physical and mental well-being. My students do their very best within their abilities to participate in sports and activities which all children their age love and enjoy. It is very rewarding to see their accomplishments and the positive impact physical education makes in their lives and daily school schedule.

My Project

This project is to create a fun and safe environment for special needs children during physical education class. Our students have a variety of physical and emotional needs that can be met with these materials. We are trying to integrate games, sports activities, relaxation techniques, socialization, and sensory input into our gym periods. We notice many students have decreased behaviors and many students enjoy coming to the gym and complete their studies later in the day with confidence and ease. When a child completes a physical fitness activity such as scoring a soccer goal, getting a basketball in the hoop, learning how to balance, winning a race or completing an obstacle course it builds up their confidence and self-esteem!
